How is globalization changing our own culture?

To understand how globalization has made an impact to our culture, we must know what they mean. In my understanding, culture represents the beliefs and attitudes of the people. As for globalization, it's about the connection of different parts of the world and how it is spread across the globe.

To enhance the understanding, I might have provided examples from everyday's observation.

Fashion: Back then, Bruneians used to wear traditional clothing. The women wear baju kurong while the men wear baju melayu. Nowadays, they wear casual clothes while some wear formal clothes. The Bruneian women wear long sleeve blouses alongside a long skirt and tudong while Bruneian men tend to wear M.I.B. which is a traditional Bruneian clothing. And current influence for Bruneians are American and Korean based on how the wear and how they act.

Music: Brunei is known for its traditional music. With the current generation getting exposed to pop music from America and Korea to the radio, there are Bruneian artists leaning to that genre while there are some who went to do their own ways and tackle other genres. Well known examples of Bruneian artists are Aziz Harun and Fakhrul Razi.

Movies: Back then, there are movies from America, Malaysia and other countries that play in the cinemas. Brunei were not known for their films until movies like Yasmine premiered 6 years ago and it impacted how local filmmakers make movies. There were some hits and misses of Bruneian films but Bruneians tend to give support to the local filmmakers.

Food: Brunei is also known for their iconic local foods such as ambuyat, satay, nasi katok and there are shops that sells these foods. But nowadays, there are few restaurants that sell local food and there are more restaurants that sells international foods that range from Korean to American. Mostly the latter as fast food brands like Pizza Hut, McDonalds and KFC tend to have more branches.

But what happens if the country or its people exposed themselves to the negativity or the disadvantages of globalized culture? The best way to deal with is to practice M.I.B. and give acknowledgement to those who are stating misconceptions about the country.
